I also live in New England, Jim, and I see a lot of stone work (it's become part of what I do), and you're spot on - this is much wider stone work at the base of the "neck" than you usually see in a colonial stone wall. The head is somewhat consistently serpentine, sort of wedge-shaped, in appearance, from all directions, but you don't really see it until you get closer. I believe you might be referring to how some large boulders will share different aspects, different looks, depending on the angle? I have seen that a few times, but that doesn't seem to be a characteristic of this one.
